Featured BOC Approved Provider
Yes! We had decent processes in place before, but the
combination of auditing all of our courses and now having a
process that doesn’t have any holes in it really makes us feel
more confident that our CE courses will be consistent across
the board, regardless of what division or staff is working on
any particular product.
Our course objectives are focused on specific outcomes,
and we are regularly analyzing course exams and evaluations
to ensure that these outcomes are being met. We know that
our courses are at the appropriate level to be considered
continuing education, and the Standards and our process
help us to ensure that will be the case going forward. I spoke
a little to this above, but the biggest thing that the new
Standards have done for us is to ensure that regardless of
who is in what role in our organization, we have a process to
follow. Because of that, the quality and continuity of Human

What advice do you have for organizations looking
to comply with the Standards for BOC Approved
Providers and BOC Approved Provider Handbook as
they develop education programs?
My advice would be to start with developing a new policy
manual. By doing that, and using the sample provided by the
BOC, it will help you look at your processes from a different
angle. It’s so easy to just get caught up in the motions

be omitting or not doing in the most effective way. Using
the sample handbook provided by BOC helped us think
about things we hadn’t done before and how they could be
Next, even though it may be time consuming, I would suggest
going course by course through all of your offerings and really
getting into the content, the objectives, etc. This helped us
realize that some of our programs really needed to be retired.
It also helped to ensure all of our courses met the content
level required by BOC.
Then, I would share that policy manual and the Standards
with several people within your organization. This helps others
understand what the BOC is looking for. Plus, you may be
surprised where you get recommendations from, depending
on what type of organization you are. Having more people
aware that the Standards exist and what the processes are
will help with compliance.
Now, all of our Acquisitions Editors know what the BOC
expects, and therefore, we have less issue with their
suggesting products that don’t meet the BOC audience
requirement in the first place. In the past, we really relied on
one or two Acquisitions Editors to be familiar with the BOC.
By sharing this information with more people, we are getting
